2011 Year in Music

Yikes - this blog has been dormant for a whole year! Let's roll out a year-end music list before google kicks me off the internet due to inactivity...

Alphabetical Highlights:

Adele, 21- what needs to be said? I really liked 19, I really liked 21, I'm sure I'll really like 23 and whatever else comes. It's great to see her rule pop music, and a nice bonus to see Dan Wilson become more famous for his writing/production/piano on "Someone Like You".

AM + Shawn Lee, Celestial Electric - Dark Into Light. I think this represents what I like most about "electronic" music - there are real live instruments here, it just happens to have a lot of keyboards, and some simple, straightforward lyrics. "When we're gone, ghosts live on. Have we tried? Have we done our best to turn the wrong into right? Turn the dark into light?" I didn't care for the whole album, but not only is this a great single, it's my favorite video this year:

Boy Blue - Robot Tube Socks
This got airplay late this year on 88.9. A local Milwaukee band I'd never heard of. Also keyboard-driven, not-quite-dance music. Killer hook. I spent a fair amount of time trying to buy this, and was not able to. Note to those wanting to make it in the music biz: make your music available! While the world comes up empty on iTunes, there is an embed version on Bandcamp:

Brett Dennen, Loverboy This was a big part of our summer soundtrack on the Martin Family Vacation. "Sydney", "Dancing at a Funeral" and "Comeback Kid" were blasting in the rented mini-van out to Yellowstone and back.

Death Cab for Cutie, Codes and Keys Another solid album from DC. I was hooked when I heard the rolling bassline, catchy guitar riff and echo-drenched vocals of the super-produced "You Are a Tourist".

Decemberists, The King is Dead Way back in January, the Decemberists dropped the lit-rock trappings and tapped their inner Neil Young and R.E.M. Peter Buck adds the actual R.E.M. influence - in my head I still hear Michael Stipe mumbling circa 1988 after the guitar intro to "Calamity Song".

Fitz and the Tantrums, Pickin' Up The Pieces "Moneygrabber" was the early single that hooked you in, but this brand of neo-soul was put on repeat for me after seeing them live in late January at the Pablove Benefit show. They played second fiddle to Silverson Pickups that night, but they blew away the crowd. They had exactly what you look for in a live show - energy to burn, and a pure enjoyment to be up on the stage performing. As a bonus, Fitz and Noelle were signing cds at the merch table after the show. Maybe someday they'll be able to take success for granted, but it's a treat to catch humble artists on their way up.

Foster the People - Pumped Up Kicks This was one where you felt on like you were on the inside of the scene when it first got a little airplay, then the next day it's everywhere. Inescapable, but I didn't get tired of it. They are the Phoenix/MGMT of 2011 - they captured lightning with this track, and it will be selling cars, shiny electronics and TV shows for years to come. Weezer added their version (Rivers reading the lyrics he hasn't memorized):

Givers, In Light - Up, Up, Up Maybe this year's Vampire Weekend? I thought this would be a one-track treat, but the record shows signs of growing. Fun summer single.

Gomez, Whatever's On Your Mind I keep with these guys each release, and they keep doing what they do, without a lot of fanfare. They have the same formula - three vocalists with different styles creating nice pop songs. Nice.

The Head and the Heart, s/t "Lost in My Mind" was another staple over the summer. Our vacation rental mini-van had satellite radio. It was the first time I'd spent so many hours on end with XM/Sirius. The variety of stations is pretty amazing, but once you lock into one, there's a lot of repetition. We heard the head, we heard the heart, asking us over and over how the bricklaying was coming, how was our engine running? Luckily for our long trip both the engine and radio kept us going.

Jason Isbell, Here We Rest I'm not sure that it matters, but both Jason Isbell and Drive By Trucker had new music last year, and I was only excited by this. He's not only an extremely prolific tweeter, but he continues to put out great southern rock and soulful, lamenting, downtrodden, I'm-going-to-tell-you-again-I'm-from-Alabama ballads.

Milagres, Glowing Mouth - Here to Stay I don't know a whole lot about this besides the single, which is now gaining on 88.9. It has the feeling of a keeper, rather than a throwaway. I don't know what's up with the video - a cross between Reservoir Dogs and Team America? Pain through puppetry.

Rubblebucket, Triangular Daisies - Came Out of a Lady One of the few songs that I immediately wanted, but had no interest in anything else by them. A summer single, a horn-blast filled temporary feel-good one-night stand. Styling courtesy of Dee Lite circa 1990? Vagina/birth references? A video that seems dated as soon as it came out?

Thievery Corporation, Culture of Fear After a number of years and albums, you can put Thievery Corporation on a "Play All" mix and let the distinctive lounge dub sounds wash over the background. I like that. But the title track is different, and better, courtesy of lyrics rapped by Mr. Lif. TC has certainly been political in the past, and this continues looking at the post 9/11 landscape.

TV On The Radio, Nine Types of Light "Second Song" was my favorite single from this year. The slow burn from talking over synths to buzz saw guitar to full-on Prince falsetto boogie did it for me, but the whole album is worthy. I don't have a long history with the media critic darlings, and I missed their show in Milwaukee in the fall, but they deserve attention whatever their next move is.

Wilco, The Whole Love Wilco deserves all the great reviews this year. They stretch out, amp up and get more interesting with this release. Check out album opener "Art of Almost" as exhibit A: Nels Cline gets to fully work his intricate guitar / radio shack electro-knob machine in a 7 minute sublime barrage.

Happy New Year!

I can tell that 2010 was a good year for music, as I had a really hard time cutting down a faves playlist to fit the plastic-cd 80 minute format... Here's where I ended up:

Broken Bells | Broken Bells - The High Road
Danger Mouse continued his Midas Touch with James Mercer

French Horn Rebellion | Up All Night EP - Up All Night
These Milwaukee-raised brothers have, of course, transplanted to Brooklyn to spread the disco-retro vibes.

Jukebox the Ghost | Everything Under the Sun - Schizophrenia
The piano-based pop trio follows up their debut with another great package of catchy tunes.

Galactic | Ya-Ka-May - Heart of Steel
Strong album from New Orleans funk outfit. Made me delve deeper into the Stanton Moore library.

Janelle Monae | The Archandriod - Tightrope
Much has been made of the ambitious project from Atlanta-based Janelle Monae - the sci-fi multi-album concept. More genres are covered by this record in more ways than most artists ever attempt. Something for everyone in the best possible sense. Best hip-hop / dance track of the year.

The Black Keys | Brothers - Tighten Up
Black Keys dialed down the grungy swamp, just a bit on this record. thick-less-freakness? Just enough to let the melodies through. As a parent, I took special pleasure in this video:

Spoon | Transference - The Mystery Zone
A front-to-back cohesive early-year treat. Plenty of good songs to pick from.

Corinne Bailey Rae | The Sea - The Blackest Lily
One where I liked the single much better than anything else on the disc.

Carolina Chocolate Drops | Genuine Negro Jig - Hit 'Em Up Style
I originally heard of this group through the Music Maker Relief Foundation, a charity with a unique mission. This cover helped spread the word of their old-time black string band music.

Vampire Weekend | Contra - Cousins
Give it up to the kids on their sophomore release.

Cold War Kids | Behave Yourself EP - Audience
Never underestimate the power of a piano in a pop song

The National | High Violet - Bloodbuzz Ohio
I didn't end up listening to the whole album nearly as much as "Alligator" a few years back. But the baritone can't be denied. Best drums of the year on this track.

The Hold Steady | Heaven is Whenever - The Weekenders
Like an old friend at this point. Another early-year album. Not a blockbuster, but a keeper. They're playing a NYE show in Milwaukee tonight!

Jaill | That's How We Burn - Everyone's Hip
Jaill, Milwaukee natives signed to Subpop, are opening the Hold Steady show tonight. Midwest hipsters.

Chris DeMay | Bigger Than Small - Red Letter Day
Milwaukeean whom usually stays in the alt-country vein. This song got good rotation on 88.9, and will go down as a classic every Feb 14 hereafter. Also, check out the Muzzle of Bees Wilco tribute.

Delta Spirit | History From Below - Bushwick Blues
Check out this interview on World Cafe. Hearing the story behind "Ballad of Vitaly" made me a fan. The 10 minute folk-saga doesn't lend itself to a mix as well as the rocker Bushwick.

The Walkmen | Lisbon - Angela Surf City
A great discovery this year. Juveniles and Angela are the first two tracks, and well worth the price of admission.

The New Pornographers | Together - Moves
Neko and considerable company release another great record. I couldn't find a video for Moves, so here's Crash Years:

Arcade Fire | The Suburbs - We Used To Wait
One of the most hyped releases of 2010, doesn't disappoint. Although, to be honest, I didn't get through most of it. The interactive html5 video for The Wilderness Downtown is not to be missed.

Freelance Whales | Weathervanes - Generator Second Floor
I don't know if it was the wide array of instrumentation, the scrappy subway/SXSW performances or the lead soprano, but this was my favorite album of the year.

Others of Note:
Girl Talk - All Day. Hard to put one track on a mix, when the whole 90 minutes is a giant continuous mash-up. There are just a few samples to try to place as you listen.
LCD Soundsystem - This is Happening. A favorite to play at work. Better the more it's played.
Florence and the Machine - Lungs. Dog Days Are Over - hand claps never sounded so good.
JP, Chrissie and the Fairground Boys - Fidelity! The best story - true love.
The Temper Trap - Conditions. Light as air.
Alejandro Escovedo - Street Songs of Love. One of my favorite shows in Milwaukee this year. The songs are better with the backstory of his live performances. I came late to this legend.

Santa Rampage 2010

I'd never done the annual Santa Cycle Rampage before, but it's the type of Milwaukee event that I love: silly, two wheels, drinking involved... It's a simple premise: put on a Santa Suit, get on your bike, meet a few hundred other like-minded folks at a bar, continue on to other bars.

There are a lot of things to like about this event, but I have to say that my favorite was perhaps the first thing I experienced. I pumped up the tires, put on my suit, and headed out for the one mile ride to our meeting place. There is something about seeing a full-on Santa riding a bicycle in the winter that simply makes people smile. Kids pressed their faces against the car windows, trucks honked and I spent most of the ride waving to everyone. This was the theme of the day, and only increased when we rode en masse. We were ambassadors of good cheer, brightening the day of all we passed. And that was before the drinks were served.

The Wauwatosa contingent met at Cafe Hollander in the Village, and proceeded to work our way east to Cafe Hollander on Downer for the "official" start. Plans were made over morning coffee, bloody marys and belgian beers, and we took off on a brazen path right through the heart of Milwaukee - down Wisconsin Ave and up Water St.

From Cafe Hollander, we proceeded to Lakefront Brewery, where we filled up the hall:

After a round of the best Milwaukee Craft Brew, we headed south through downtown, across the 6th Street bridge and roundabout (circling a few times for the news cameras) to the Great Lakes Distillery, home of Rehorst Vodka and some great booze-making tanks:

After this, we headed west to the area's premier polka and pabst-infused neighborhood tavern, Kochanksi's Concertina Bar. The atmosphere couldn't have been better, with live polka, hot chili and tamales in the back, and a packed house of santas.

The Bikes

There were some absolutely great displays of creativity going on. At first glance the below setup looks like standard-issue trailer with plastic Santa. But no - this rig is a mobile pirate-santa-radio broadcaster (the battery is in the green wrapped present). 104.1 FM - Radio Free Santa.

Our Wauwatosa ride-in was captained by this Schwinn tandem, complete with trailer holding stereo speakers hidden as presents, and Santa enjoying Milwaukee's finest.

Two Thousand and Ten | Milwaukee Brewers Season | The Haiku Wrapup

Five years ago I started listening to Milwaukee Brewer games on the radio as background sound for painting rooms in a new house. I didn't follow the team, I just expected to hear Bob Uecker on scratchy A.M. radio to paint to. It was a good diversion, requiring a minimum of attention. The pace of a baseball game matched the job at hand - watching paint dry. The game is so slow, that if anything of note happened, it was repeated and talked about for the next ten minutes. But that was the start of something... Each year I got a little more interested, until I decided to track each 2010 game and write a quick haiku for each one.

The haiku form fits baseball well. There are so many games, there's no need to take more than a few lines for each one. Technology made it easy: my work-issued Blackberry and Twitter combined for an easy Brewer-haiku distribution system. The smartphone showed the recap of a game, and a text to my twitter account got me through the task in a few minutes. The 140 character format is more than enough to say what you need until the next game comes around.

Quite a journey from not caring at all to a semi-obsessive quest to document a season in Japanese poetry. Will there be more tweets next season? Like any Brewer fan can attest, hope springs eternal, and there's always next year. www.twitter.com/brew_haiku.
